Pa Pierre. It had taken them nearly a week to find Pierre. The trail of his death led through the woods, back to two men, who had met at a tavern. In their final moments, they had discussed a plan to kill Pierre. It would have been easy. A simple knife fight. But when the two men got closer to Pierre, he had to make a choice: defend himself or defend the people in the house. The people in the house knew the story of the “Black Prince.” The “Black Prince” had killed several people, even getting his hands and face chopped off by his “enemies.” As he rose out of the lake, the people in the house knew that he was no ordinary human being—a deadly creature to the citizens of Vaux, especially if the King were to get a good look at him. The “Black Prince” had killed a lot of people. There were three men and a woman who stood guard over Pierre’s body; when he began to fall, they would have killed him. One man even tried to take out a knife in Pierre’s throat, but was stopped by a group of the King’s men. They had realized that they were holding the “Black Prince” prisoner, and had sent him into a nearby forest for safety. The woman and one man had also been caught outside, and it seemed probable they also would be killed. But, for the safety of the people at Vaux, he had decided that while in the forest he would not put up a fight to escape. He would call for help. He thought that, should the people reach their home, he would have them killed. The woman tried to hold on to her husband, but to no avail. No one would take her husband. She died of a broken heart. The first man from the tavern, the hunter, had been shot with his own gun. His body fell to the ground. The woman had shot herself in the stomach with her own gun. The third man, one of the other dead men, had been placed in the path of the fall. He had run to save his friend. But the fallen man’s body had fallen on the edge of a cliff. He had been thrown from his bicycle to the edge of the cliff, and would have fallen, too. The three men stood behind the King as he watched the body fall, and then, as his eyes rested on the bodies of the men, he had turned and ran
